Davy Fitgerald Retires
April 1st, 2008. [ Comments: none ]

After months of speculation Clare goalkeeper Davy Fitzgerald has announced his retirement from inter county hurling. He suffered a serious finger injury at the end of last year and while he made an appearance in a challenge game against Kilkenny recently he’s now decided to call it a day.

He was a brilliant goalkeeper and one i’d consider among the best of all time. Clare games will be less colourful without him roaring and shouting at everyone near him, although he might end up in managment there some day given his stints with LIT.

He has three all stars from 1995, 2002 and 2005 to go with his two all irelands of 95 and 97 so he should be retiring a happy man.

Here’s a clip from youtube of him at his finest, burying a penalty in the back of the net and then haring back down the field at 90 miles an hour to get back into goals. It’s from their 1995 Munster final clash with Limerick and it was number 15 in the GAA’s top 20 moments.
