Lidl have been forced to recall the hurling helmets they were selling after concerns were raised that they don’t meet the official safety standards. They launched their range of hurling gear back in February and it was endorsed by Cork’s Brian Corcoran. Their helmet was selling for €49.99, significantly cheaper than the Mycro and Cooper brands which currently dominate the market. Apparently the helmet meets some safety standards but not the standard the GAA uses, so they’re recalling them all and offering a refund.

Helmets are pretty expensive but then again they have a crucial safety role and indeed are due to become compulsory for all players at all grades in the coming years. Hopefully Lidl may be able to get the helmets certified to the right standards and back on the market. Could do with a bit of competition to bring the prices down from the €80-€100 mark they’re at, especially for newcomers or parents trying to buy for the kids.
