The hurling championship kind of started this weekend with wins for Monaghan and Tyrone up north. I say kind of because the Ulster championship has no bearing or place in the Liam McCarthy campaign. Antrim will be the only Ulster team competing there. Nonetheless the Ulster championship is being contested by all 9 counties and London which makes it the biggest provincial championship in hurling this year.
In the preliminary round Cavan were cruelly denied by a late late Monaghan goal and 14 man Tyrone held on to beat Fermanagh. Both results hold up the respective league form where Monaghan finished ahead of Cavan in division 4 and Tyrone were in division 3 ahead of Fermanagh who were in 4.
