[ # ] Kilkenny win Leinster Final Easily
July 6th, 2008

As expected Kilkenny easily retained their Leinster crown beating Wexford by 5-21 to 0-17. The first half was a close exciting one but Kilkenny upped their game in the second half and got some early goals to help them pull away.

Couple of yellow card for the cats including a double for Martin Comerford and Richie Power when both high tackled Paul Roche and Tommy Walsh was lucky not to get a red for a wild swing across the legs of Diarmuid Lyng.

Eddie Brennan and Richie Power provided most of the firepower in the second half and Eoin Larkin got the TV3 man of the match after a good all action display.

Another decent show from TV3 although the commentator is a bit annoying.

I think its a disgrace what Tommy Walsh got away with yesterday. Brendan Bugler is going to miss a Munster final over something much less.

Surely if the GAA are serious about discipline they’ll do what they did with Dublin’s Colin Moran in the football - upgrade to a 4 week ban.

Of course cos it’s kilkenny that’s unlikely to happen.
And even if he got 4 weeks he’d probably miss nothing anyway cos the semi is nearly 5 away

lets hope in coming years Galway and antrim join leinster, nobody even watches leinster final these days and its a disgrace taht so many stonger munster teams have to go thorough 3-4 tough games before reaching ateam who scraped past dublin and got hammered by kilkenny. No disrespect to wexford bit I know which team i would want in quarters.

The Leinster hurling championship is a sham. Wexford, Dublin and Offaly are all on about the same level and Kilkenny are way ahead. The 2nd half demolition does little or nothing for morale in Wexford and this kind of hammering year on year is going to kill the game in the province bit by bit. Either take Kilkenny out of Leinster and put them in with Munster for now or get Galway in to Leinster and create some kind of counter balance to Kilkenny.
Hopefully over time Dublin, Wexford and Offaly will improve once again and we can look forward to a leinster hurling final that lasts 70 mins and not 35 and has an attendance closer to 50,000 rather than a pathetic attendance of just under 20,000 last sunday.
If the attendance alone doesn’t send a message to the GAA that the hurling championship needs reform then I don’t know what will. Saying that we’ll play it in Wexford park or Nowlan Park next year so it will ‘create a better atmosphere’ is just papering over the craics and not dealing with the issue itself which is a poor poor one sided farce of a championship.

The plan for next year seems to be to get galway and antrim into leinster. galway can challenge kilkenny and the addition of antrim might spur on dublin/offaly/wex

If it gets approval of course - galway county board have already turned down a move into leinster twice yet then then give out about lack of games. whatever the HDC decides should be pushed through without allowing county boards veto it
