[ # ] Gerald McCarthy resigns but does anything change…
March 11th, 2009

Gerald McCarthy has finally given in to the pressure and resigned but it’s hard to know where it leaves the situation in Cork with the old guard in the county board still in charge and unlikely to change their processes. Frank Murphy and the county board have always been the real problem but they’re hardly going to resign now are they!

Read Gerald McCarthy’s hard hitting statement on why he resigned.

this is an absolute disgrace and i am afraid not enough coverage has been given to those in support of gerald. cork players are dictators and bullies, not role models as they like to believe. yet again they have bullied people so they can have their own way, it is a sad time for hurling across the country. people are worried this will have a rippling effect, i dont think it will for 2 reasons, 1, no other county would get away with this sort of behaviour, they would be told sort it out or dont play, end of, but not get all the attention cork did. 2nd is no other group of people could possibly be so insensitive and backward to get their own way…. only thing i can hope now is they get a new manager and get destroyed in championship. anyone who asks a cork player to speak at a public event again should really question what message they are sending out to younger people…..

Yea, I see today where Sean Og says they’re ready to play again and to work with the county board in finding a new manager. They’re just mercenaries or whores, whichever fits better. As soon as Gerald goes they’re back in business despite claiming all along their main beef was with county board.

The GAA authorities lack on control on this is bad too - those players should be banned from playing for life

Frank Murphy and the county board have always been the real problem but they’re hardly going to resign now are they!

The players keep saying that the county board is the problem - so whence the refusal to play under Gerald McCarthy and the thuggish tactics to force him to resign (which I hope they had no hand in)?

What happens if the personality of the next manager isn’t compatible with their sensitive souls?

The truth is that the Cork players have claimed a right which no set of players, amateur or professional, should have - the right to choose the manager. It is nothing to do with their supposed grievances, but everything to do with power. They have no problem with splitting the GAA if it comes to it, but maybe this is what it’s all about.

I’ll be very interested to observe the reactions of ordinary GAA fans - not the Cork variety - to these players when (or if - perhaps they’ll have more demands!) they play in the championship. From my observation, there is no support for the Cork players outside Cork.
